…and other awesome Sugar Skull gifts & accessories!

Ever wonder where it all began?

The tradition of figurines made out of sugar actually came out of Europe.  Tracing back to Palermo, Italy, it was common practice to create figurines out of sugar as religious decorations. As sugar became more abundant, Mexican culture adopted the tradition into their Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities with the creation of sugar skulls.

A pile of groovy sugar skulls, decorated by Thaneeya McArdle

Over time, sugar skull designs became more intricate, elaborate, and colorful. During Dia de los Muertos celebrations, sugar skulls represented a departed soul.  As a way to indicate the individual represented, the name of individuals celebrated were written on the foreheads of the skulls and placed in the home or gravestone to welcome their return. Designs typically portray bright colors, floral designs, and a big ol’ smile in the jovial folk art style of Mexican culture.

Who doesn’t love a happy skull?

Does all this talk of sugar have your sweet tooth aching?

This Saturday, October 5th from 6pm-9pm, we’re throwing an early Day of the Dead celebration!

Stop by and get yourself some Sugar Skull Treats and Spooky Drinks!

There will be face painting and Lamphouse Photo Co. will be there to take pictures of your beautifully painted faces. First 10 guests will receive free portraits…so don’t be late!

Don’t forget to pick up your limited edition Lucinda’s buttons!

…AND to top it off, a $100 gift certificate will be rewarded to the best Sugar Skull costume that night!
